The last few years have been some of the most challenging, yet rewarding vintages that I have experienced in my 15 years of winemaking.
Since the drought of 2016, the vines seem to be keeping us on our toes with unique challenges every season that need to be overcome to ensure that quality is maintained.
This year the cold spring conditions that prevailed during August and September seemed to push the development of the vineyards back by some 10 – 15 days in some blocks. The delay caused a lot of simultaneous ripening in the white wine cultivars, and we had to get a lot of grapes in over quite a short period of time. The positive is that the cool conditions, especially the cool evenings that prevailed during ripening, has led to great acids on our white wines with intense flavour development in cultivars like Sauvignon Blanc. The ripening for the red wines has also been very good for phenolic development and the reds seem to be achieving optimal ripeness at lower sugar levels, which should translate to more balanced wines.
The recent rainfall has thrown a bit of a curveball as far as the remaining red grapes are concerned slowing down ripening. Time will tell how the remaining blocks hold up over the coming week or two during the last stretch of harvest.
